INTERNET AND WIFI
There is no proper service in rural Ireland and no prospect of one for the moment. So, much to our regret, we cannot offer free WIFI to our visitors.
For our personal use, we subscribe on a yearly basis, to Vodafone, and their modem suits our needs: it is quite adequate for e-mails and google, which we use regularly, for academic purposes.
With certain guarantees, we should be pleased to put this at the disposal of civilised adults (à titre gracieux), making it absolutely clear that this offer, is not included in the rent and does not cover any downloading. It is not for recreational purposes, but to allow the visitors to keep in touch with their families and friends, check in their flights and look up restaurants and such things. It must not be used for netflix, video games or any sort of downloading.
If this happens, the monthly supply of megas will be used up in a few days and the visitors that follow will be deprived of the facility. So as the nuns used to say to us in school, “you will be on your honour”. We ask for a 50€ deposit, which will be refunded at the end of your stay.
If there are teenagers or young adults in the party, the code must not be given to them. We know from bitter experience that asking teenagers not to download is like asking chain smokers to give up cigarettes at a day’s notice. Whatever they say, it can’t be done. It is their second nature.
However, we do have a solution for these downloader addicts. We can put a separate modem at their disposal with a sim card and they can pay as they go; for the loan of the modem we require a deposit of 50€ (if you give a cheque, the cheque will not be lodged), which will be refunded when you return it, on your departure. The running of this will be at the consumer’s expense. Top ups can be bought at all convenience stores, post offices and filling stations.
The Modem (Huawei E5330) is simple to work and, unless the mast is down, the reception is good.
Note the number on the sim card; you will need it; open up the back of the modem and put in the sim card. Plug it in and let it charge; type in the code: BAN0A0LG. If you have trouble with this, there is a free helpline. Call: 1913.
